Discusses a Mrs. F who had stolen writings from a few poets, including Markham; this lady was suppose to make all the checks out to Mrs. Markham but never did and vanished; Mrs. Markham had sent a check of eighty dollars to him; talks about spirits.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
